Captain America #49 Cover

Marvel's solicitations for April 2009 are now online, featuring Captain America #49. Here's how Marvel describes the issue:

CAPTAIN AMERICA #49
Written by ED BRUBAKER
Pencils by LUKE ROSS
Cover by STEVE EPTING
The most important issue of Captain America since issue 25 is finally here! Sharon Carter's dreams are forcing her to relive the death of Steve Rogers -- and her time under the control of Dr. Faustus. But will these dreams also reveal hidden secrets about what she saw and did the day Steve died? By Ed Brubaker and Luke Ross.
32 PGS./Rated T+ ...$2.99

This is my 28th cover painting, and it's certainly not in any way a departure of what I've been doing stylistically. I'm conflicted over my approach to the covers. I want to do more loose, expressive, painterly pieces (note Boba Fett's cape, for example), but I have established a certain look for the covers of Captain America, and I like the idea of keeping the run consistent. For now, this is the side that's winning.

Im lovin everything you do on this run Steve. I havent missed an issue yet and dont plan on it at all. I think the ideas about the looser effects would be cool and most welcome, I would definetly love to see Cap in that flowing design.

Another cool cover. This one has a real '60's/70's paperback feel to it like the old 'Destroyer' books.

Thanks jokesterjmac and Michael. The old 60s/70s paperback feel is exactly what I'm trying to achieve on the Cap covers. I'm glad it's coming across that way at least a little bit!

Beautiful cover, as usual!
For my first comment in here (something I've been meaning to do for a while) I would like to ask you a question, Steve.
Are you in any liberty to tell us if you're preparing something (even more) special for the cover for #50 (or #51 that it's when CA reaches #600, if I'm not mistaken)?
Maybe even... A 2 page spread?!
If you can't, I'll understand...

Kravis - Nothing to tell yet. We're actually discussing the cover to #50 this week, but nothing's been decided yet. Thanks for commenting. Don't be a stranger!

Hey Steve

I just wanted to chime in and say that I did notice a sort of consistency to the covers, but honestly, I'm sure that whatever you decide to run with will be fantastic. I really do love the layouts to your covers, especially to the latest issues.

Keep up the great work.

Jokester- Marvel has not issued any posters of my covers that I'm aware of. Maybe one day.

Dan - Thanks. I'm glad I could get your man Falcon on there for you!

Good to see Sharon again...

I'd love to see a step by step of one of these Cap covers. Are you starting with a scanned in pencil rendering?

Steve Epting said...

Funny you should mention that Michael. I'm planning on posting a step by step of this cover next week. Stay tuned...

Another home run! I seem to remember you saying you were wrestling with how to juggle the elements of the story for the cover - well, it's a total kickass job that makes one want to grab the book off the stands-which is the whole purpose!

At the risk of sounding like the fanboy I am, Falcon looks tough as nails and Sharon is (dare I say) very hot and cool at the same time!

Fantastic cover Steve! how long would something like this take you?

Real shame they dont make posters of the artwork that people actually want

Really great cover!

Drew - Thanks!

Lee - thanks, I think I worked on this one about 2 days.

Jokesterjmac - I'm not sure who makes those decisions. I know it's not me!

Fabio - Thank you!

Nice job Steve! I have to say I do like the feel of the cover style you have been doing, but I trust you to make whatever stylistic choices you want! Whichever way you go with I'll be buying it.

I also appreciate how your covers do actually relate to the story within. Pin-up covers are alright every now and then but I find that I can't recognize an issue just by the cover when every issue is a pin-up; they just kind of blend together. With my older comics I can glance at a cover and tell you what happens within. I can also do that with your covers, which I greatly appreciate.

Keep up the great work!

I better be able to get this issue tomorrow!!!
this snow is making anything hard to get.

Steve Epting said...

Thanks Jay - We try to get the cover to relate to the contents as much as possible.

Jokesterjmac - good luck!

I'm thinking that Steve Rogers is going be very jealous when he gets back to find out his girlfriend has hooked-up romantically with his old partner. I'm saying this because I thought I read somewhere that when Steve does come back (and he will) that he's going to have to deal with some big things. Great artwork! I love the work you and Brubaker have done on Captain America! It's the best book out there right now. Iron Man is #2.
