No, you didn't miss 449 issues. After Captain America #50 in May, the book will return to it's original numbering making the next issue #600. Here's how it's described in Marvel's June 2009 Solicitations:
CAPTAIN AMERICA #600
Written by ED BRUBAKER with MARK WAID, ROGER STERN & OTHERS
Pencils by BUTCH GUICE, LUKE ROSS, DALE EAGLESHAM & OTHERS
Cover by STEVE EPTING
50/50 Cover by ALEX ROSS
Where were you when Captain America died? It's the anniversary of the day Steve Rogers was killed, a day of reflection and mourning in the Marvel U...a time to look back on the things Steve did and what he stood for... or is this issue actually the beginning of the most wicked plot twist since issue 25? Yeah, actually it's both. Plus, contributions from Cap creators past and present, including a very special essay by Joe Simon, a classic story from Cap’s Golden Age, a full gallery of 600 Cap covers, and more anniversary shenanigans than you can shake a shield at!
104 PGS./New and Reprints/Rated T+ ...$4.99
A fairly straightforward cover of James Buchanan Barnes in his three identities all under the watchful eye of Steve Rogers. It should be a great issue and I'm looking forward to reading it.

Barnes is by far the best character in the Marvel U right now.
And this cover definitely showcases that.
Your covers to #50 and #600 are just astounding. Just fantastic.
I'm curious about something, maybe you can help, Steve?
It's just how #600 was reached. I know that Cap vol. #3 ended with the issue numbering being #518. Vol.4 of Cap was 32 issues, which would equal #550. If that's the case, shouldn't the #50th issue of Cap actually be the #600th issue and the issue labeled #600 is reall #601?
Raphael - I found this online somewhere. There seems to be a one issue difference between this caculation and yours:
The original v1 went to #454; v2 #1-13 (455-467); v3 #1-50 (468-517); v4 #1-32 (518-549); v5 #1-50 (550-599), and the next issue would then be #600.
Personally, I don't know what's correct. I'm just going by what I'm told.
Thanks for the comments guys!
Thanks so much for that clarification Steve! Do you think you could indulge your fans a bit by telling us if you're contributed to the interior art for #600?
This is great - I think Rogers is coming back - but I may be wrong - can't wait to see you Marvels series - you are part of a legendary run on a legendary character - and we get to enjoy your work.
thanks -bh
Looks great, Steve! It's fun to be part of this issue.
Fantastic cover Steve...
Awesome.
I am missing Mr. Epting on Captain America already...
You, Guice, Perkins, and Ross are an amazing art team. I'm sure you get this all the time, but the consistency you guys bring to the book is incredible. And major props to your inker(s) and colorist too!
Raphael - As of right now, it doesn't look like I'll be doing any interiors for issue #600. :(
Roger - Thanks! I can't wait to read it. I really enjoyed working with you on Marvel Universe.
Brian, Tiz, SHIELD boy and Joe - Thanks guys. I appreciate the comments!
Please, dear God, tell me that you will be returning to Captain America?!?!?!?

Al - I think the plan is for me to return to Cap after Bru and I are done with the Marvels Project mini series.
I'm sorry to see you didn't do any of the interiors for CAP #600 - it just wasn't the same without you.
Anyways, thanks for all the great work you've done on the series through most of the last 50 issues. Whether it was Steve Rogers or Bucky, your renditions of Cap are all-time classics.
Thanks for the nice comments Robert. I was a bit disappointed to be left out of Cap #600 also. At least I got to do one of the covers.
After a 15 year hiatus from reading them this series got me back in full on. Thanks for the awesome work!
Hey Mr. Epting,
Just thought I would drop by to say that I loved your artwork on Captain America #600, and just recently purchased a signed copy of it. I'm also an artist myself, I have done lots of sketches and paintings, and am trying to learn more about comic book illustration. Any tips? LOL Anyways, take care and keep up the amazing work.
Dan
