Steve,

I am curious what is your approach in photoshop to create such images? Do you use the burn/dodge tools, what kind of brush selection, etc...

That's a "quick" sketch! It bloody brilliant.

How long did it take? Just how quick was it?

looks brilliant. What brush is that, looks a bit like the chalk one from painter.

Paul - I'd guess maybe 15-20 minutes. There's really nothing to the actual painting - it's basically 2 colors on a neutral gray background. Most of the time was getting the shape of the head and eyes right - and drawing the webs of course.

Brad and Dylan - the brush is a standard Photoshop brush that is similar to the chalk one in Painter. I did modify the settings some however. As for dodge and burn - I almost never use them. I use the burn occasionally for very specific things that need to be darkened, but it's very subtle and it's always set on about 5% so I can't go overboard with it. Always use color for shadows and highlights.

Dave and Fabio - Thanks!

Great Spidey. I've been working on some Spider related photoshop stuff to if you'd care to give it a gander. I'd love to get a comment from anyone just to know that anyone has ever looked at my blog. I'm a bit nervous about showing my stuff, but I feel like it's now or never.

Anyway, love what you and Brubaker are doing with Captain America. It's great stuff. I anxiously await each new issue.

Wow - I am definitely a fan of the Romita era eyed Spidey :D It just looks so apt for the character when it's done right like this.

Steve,
Another process question for you. Are you drawing this in pencil first then scanning it in? Also is this with a wacom tablet, or just a plain old mouse?

All of the speedpaints (with the exception of Hellboy) were done entirely in Photoshop. When I do the cover paintings however, I do scan in pencilled art (sometimes with ink wash) as seen here - http://steveepting.blogspot.com/2007/08/captain-america-32-cover_22.html

And yes, I'm using a wacom intuous tablet.

Some day I'll get around to posting a step by step here on the blog.

Oh, and I agree Dan. Romita's Spidey will always be Spider-Man to me (with Ditko and Andru rounding out the top three).

That's as good a Spider-Man as Alex Ross in my opinion.

The thought that immediately came to mind when I saw this was "Is that Spider-Man's senior yearbook photo?". I think it's the pose and the background that triggered that odd thought of mine.

Amazing! (No pun intended) I know you're on Cap, and I have no desire for you to not be on Cap, but this makes me want to see you do a Spidey arc.

Or even one-shot.

. . . Can Spidey hang out with Cap?
